赤岩湯本家忍者屋敷－からくり引き戸の再現－

中之条ビエンナーレ2019出展作品

中之条町赤岩地区に残る湯本家は、かつて真田家へ仕えていた事などから忍者の家系であったとも言われている。この歴史的背景を題材に、作品の舞台として架空の忍者屋敷を想定し、当時の技術で実現し得る建具からくりを考案・制作した。からくりの動きを媒介として、現代の人々と忍者の行動様式に共通する、自他の行為の関係性を示す。

作品は引き戸を開閉し、内部をくぐり抜ける迷路のように構成される。この建具は連結されていて、ある所を開けると別の場所が閉まる仕掛けとなっている。複数の経路があるため、自分が正解の出口へ向かって進んでいるとき、その行為は別の地点から正解を求める他者の障害になってしまう。この作品で各自が最善を求めようとすると、互いに妨害し合い解決の見えない、全員にとって最悪の状況に陥ってしまう。

忍者は目的達成のために、あえて敵対者へ利益を誘導することもあった。その利他行為により忍者が所属していた社会制度は最悪の状態（＝紛争）を免れていたという。個々の利益の追求が全体の行き詰まりへ帰結するこの作品における最適解とは、参加者が少しずつ自分の行動を制限し、譲り合う状態なのかもしれない。

Akaiwa Yumotoke Ninja House

Based on the theme of the Agatsuma Ninja, this house showcases a world where real and imaginary ninja blur together. The border between fiction and reality is growing increasingly unclear with advances in technology. The ninja have become a symbol of this overlap between the real and the imagined. 

The room that once sheltered Dutch scholar Choei Takano can still be found in the Yumotoke House. It is assumed that from there, this house which had offered refuge to fugitives, etc., then became a place where the ninja passed down certain techniques in secret. For this exhibit, a back room on the first floor that had long been kept private is being opened to the public. For this occasion, we have imagined and replicated the karakuri, ninja-style escape mechanisms, that must have once been installed here.
